Friday Training Refresher

November 17th, 2017

In addition to the scheduled training every Sunday, our trainer runs 1 hour sessions on Mondays and Fridays to help firm up the weekly activities. This week, we worked on ways to master the eventual “off-leash” course. Before that, we worked on firming up what we have been doing before. Here Luce is in a down-stay while I spend 30-60 seconds in each of the 12, 3, 6, & 9 o’clock positions around him while the other dogs are doing their thing. I was in the  9 o’clock position here and it was too good of a picture to not take it. As usual, he did great. Si, nostro cane è molto bravo.

BTW: The parking lot is closed in this area so do not be concerned that a car could drive into our area.

Luce Visits the Apple Store in Los Gatos, CA

November 16th, 2017

We had a family outing to pick up Stacey’s new computer at the Apple Store in Los Gatos. I was able to bring in the drive from her dead computer and was very happy to find that the Apple migration software was able to clone the old computer right down to the WiFi passwords and auto-fill history in Firefox. We of course brought Luce as this was a great opportunity to be in a new environment. At first he stayed in a down-stay but later he made himself very comfortable:

However, it took a while to copy all that data and eventually he was ready to go:

This was probably his “I am ready to go now” look.

Another of Luce’s Favorite Places to Hang Out

November 15th, 2017

Luce like to park himself under the kitchen table, next to Stacey in this case, and see if he can get a little attention. Here he is offering a paw so he can hold hands.

Luce in a Down-Stay

November 14th, 2017

Luce definitely has the “Stay” command down pat. Generally speaking, he usually converts a sit-stay to a down-stay on his own. This is not because of training mind you, more like lazy-Lu in action. Why run when you can walk, why walk when you can stand, why stand when you can sit, why sit when you can lie down. In this case, I “downed” him directly.  I was able to walk away, approach, and jump over him several times with no reactions. Cane Bene!!!

Training Week 8

November 13th, 2017

Luce has been coming along well in obedience training. He completed “Week 8” on Sunday and seem to be in the top of his class. Here is Stacey going through a course with stops (automatic sit), walk slow, walk fast, left, right and about turns.

Here they are coming back from a pee break (Luce that is)

BTW: Happy Birthday Paddy!!!

Luce’s Bear Trick

October 28th, 2017

Luce has a new trick. When Stacey approaches the car when he is in it, he first goes the the window where we are closest to and then sits. Then when she gets close, he lifts up both paws like a bear and holds her as best he can:

I went around the other side of the car while this was going on to take these pictures. In perfect Luce fashion, he looked over to me as if to say, “Dude, I am having a private moment here, back off”.

Luce Chasing A Ball???

October 26th, 2017

We were visiting family for a few days and Luce decided to be a ball dog for a short time. He would go chase it when thrown and then bat it around a while before bringing it back. He never showed much interest in playing fetch with a ball before so this was a total surprise. I got my phone to get a video and he did as he did previously at first but then seemed to realize he was being recorded so he stopped, looked around, and probably thought, I can’t let them get this on video. I’ll just hang around like I’m not sure what just happened. Clearly I didn’t just chase the ball out the door. I’m a Bernese Mountain Dog, not a retriever, for Pete’s sake.

Its Official, My Gym Bag is Luce’s Woobie

October 21st, 2017

This has been a recurring subject, Luce’s affinity for my gym bag. I have been putting it in the back seat on occasion and Luce settles in more so that when it is not there. He now seems to like to tuck one, or both paws under it while we drive. It has now reached “Woobie” status. A well deserved shout out to my friend Steffen for naming this so perfectly. This was Luce in the back seat when I got to the Gym:

And this was after I took out the Gym Bag, AKA: Luce’s Woobie and he was like, what happened?

In case you are too young, or maybe too old, or just out of touch. Here is the original Woobie:

Extra credit if you can answer the question: ” So are you running 220?”

Week 4 Training

October 15th, 2017

Today was week 4 training. Luce does really well walking at variable speeds, abrupt stopping, right, left, and about turns. Highly distracting environments are still a challenge but we still have many weeks to go. Here he is with Stacey doing a sit stay as Stacey walks away (launching with her right foot of course):

Then she waits at the end of the leash for a while:

Then Luce recalls perfectly.

Lui e un cane bene, si?

Weigh in Day

October 14th, 2017

Well, today was time to do a little weight in at the vet to see just how big, Big Lu is getting. He weighed in at 83.5lbs. Here he is back home cooling off on the stone tile floor:

A little later in in the day, he was happy to stand vigil at the front door while Stacey watered the front yard, so while we may call him “Lazy Lu” sometimes, he knows when to hold em’, when to fold em’, when to walk away, and when to wait by the front door for him mommy to come back inside.
